If you get a training contract at a law firm, you will need to know what seats are. They are the structure of your training contract and offer you a range of opportunities.

What Are Seats?

Within a training contract, your two years will be divided into four six-month-long placements in different areas of the firm which are known as seats.

These seats will be in different areas of law, both non-contentious and contentious where you will both work and learn from other solicitors, partners and [paralegals] around you so that you get an experience of the firm.

Some firms will also offer seats abroad, or even at client offices around the country itself but this will be highly dependant on the firm you apply for.

Larger, [magic circle] firms such as [Clifford Chance] or [Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer] will offer multiple places abroad and in a range of different areas due to their size, but training contracts at smaller high street firms will give you very limited opportunities.
